Insurance Points

At some point, you’ve had or will have an accident or violation that will cause your insurance company to add points to your policy.  It is vitally important to know how this will affect your policy, the premium increase, how long the points will remain, and what your options are when you’re faced with these points.  At-fault accidents and moving violations are situations where your risk exposure/liability becomes a matter of significance to your insurance company.  Anytime an insurer must pay out for property damage or bodily injury from your policy, they can assess points to recoup some/all of what they had to pay out.  Remember, an insurance company desires safe, responsible drivers who obey the law.

I encourage you to visit idrivesafely.com to review what your state charges for specific accidents/violations.

In N.C., points last for 3 years, and go on at your renewal, and off at your renewal.

(For example, if your renewal is 4-20 to 10-20, and you’re charged with following too closely on March 10th, 2 points will be applied to your upcoming renewal on April 20th, and come off October 20th 3 years later.

Nugget:  In N.C., if you’re involved in an at-fault accident in which there is only property damage of $1,800 or less, you will not be assessed any points.  Therefore, your premium will not increase as a result of this accident.  (You must not be charged with a moving violation related to the accident, and no licensed drivers in your home can have moving violation convictions at the time).
